SS 350 Classroom Design

During SS 350, we were asked what our ideal classroom would look like and what it would contain. We were given a list (posted below) to encourage and help us think of some of the different functions that make up a classroom. Once we completed our classroom designs after doing some research, we were able to present them to the class for a learning activity. This allowed us as a class to learn more about each of our peer's styles, as well as what they think would be the most beneficial setup of things to have in their classroom.
  • Do you want desks or tables?
  • What technology would you like to have?
  • What will your desk set up look like?
  • Will you have a podium?
  • What other supplies will be important? Maps, art supplies, ipads, computers?
  • What is your ideal lighting? Windows, lamps, overhead?
After we answered these questions by creating the classroom design, we then had to think about the student we see ourselves teaching. Would we be in an urban or rural environment and if we would be teaching middle or high school? We also had to think if we would want to teach lower-level classes or advanced placement (AP) classes.

Above is the classroom design that I created. I tried to create a mood/ vision board using Canva. My ideal classroom contains a whiteboard on the front wall with a projector above it, surrounding the whiteboard I would love to have posters that make all students feel welcome, as well as other influential women and men throughout history. In the left-hand corner of the room is where I have created a comfort zone for students if they are feeling overwhelmed. On the left wall will also be shelving - any type that I can make use of the most- which will contain craft materials, extra paper, pencils, markers, and any other essentials students may need. On the back wall will be maps, I would like several different types, and under the maps will be the computer cart if students do not have designated computers. In the corner will be my desk, I will have a globe, some fake plants, and minimal objects on my desk. Most likely there will be a stapler, tape, pens, pencils, pictures of my pets and family, and my computer, along with a calendar. Lastly, for the student seating, I will have small two-person tables that way students always have someone to do peer work with and it will be easier than moving desks together for group projects. If we need the use of larger table space, we can move the tables together or utilize another space in the school.

Overall, after completing this assignment, I think I see myself teaching high schoolers, although I am not turned away from the idea of teaching middle school. The school environment would be somewhere between rural and urban, where I would be teaching lower-level classes. The idea of teaching lower-level classes has always piqued my interest more than AP classes. I enjoy working with kids at this level. The class atmosphere that can be created in lower-level classes is completely different than AP classes and I like seeing where students are at the beginning of the year, compared to where they end and seeing what they have achieved.
