Week 9 Check-In Reflection
Considering the unit plan you are constructing for the second field rotation, how have you used the right instructional strategy, in the right way, at the right time to support students to prioritize their strategic effort to learn?
This week has been quite stressful, especially balancing school life and my personal life, although I will say, as stressed as I have been, the lesson/unit plan has been helpful in giving me structure. At first, all I knew of was my topic, but digging deeper into the resources available and different instructional strategies has made it clearer what to incorporate and how into my 3-5 day unit lesson. As we have been covering different strategies and how to complete our lessons, I'm reflecting on the teaching strategies my mentor teacher uses, one being they show videos to help students understand. The class is structured, with PowePoints, students taking notes in their digital notebooks, and an activity with each unit for assessment. Students don't often work in pairs or in groups, and I think I would like to try that strategy during my lesson. I will start students off with bell ringers like my mentor teacher does each day, and still lecture some with a PowerPoint, but I will introduce a new transition into group or pair work. Guiding the students in the group work or discussion will show students ways to start their thinking process over the questions being asked, and then allow them to turn their basic skills into more fluent and higher-quality communication skills. I also think, since my mentor teacher shows students videos when I show a video, I will connect it to Ed Puzzle so that students have to stop the video and ask questions that go along with it, being a way to assess students.
