Week 1 of Practicum at Burris Laboratory School
The first week at Burris did not go as I expected it to start. Only because I was not able to go into the school on Monday due to unfinished paperwork, but I was able to start on Tuesday so it was not that much of a delay. I was quite nervous to go into Burris, as I have never been there before or worked with high school students. I do have my substitute license and I sub in my home district for high school students, but being with the same students for more than one day seemed a little intimidating at first. However, from the day I started till now, I am feeling very good about my placement, my mentor teacher, and the students I will be working with this semester. The students are engaged, I like how the class is run so far, along with the classroom climate and culture. It is very relaxed and students are not disciplined often. The teacher never gets upset or annoyed with students and has lots of patience for their varying needs. I am excited to continue this week and see how it goes, as I teach my first lesson to my students tomorrow in government. Burris and my mentor teacher this round are much different than my practicum placement last year, so that has taken a little bit of adjustment. I feel like I can be more involved with the kids in terms of class activities, engagement, and getting to know them rather than being more of an 'aid' or always dealing with behavior management rather than my past practicum teacher.
So yeah, I think this round of practicum will go well. I am nervous each day walking in but it goes away when I see my students and engage with them. I have lots of work and growth to do but I think this experience will help a lot.
