Week 2 of Practicum at Burris Laboratory School
The second week of practicum has gone quite well. I taught a full class period in Government on Tuesday over a reading students completed Monday night that would introduce them to the new unit that would begin over Bureaucracy. Students completed the reading as homework, and in class, they participated in a whole class discussion about the reading. I asked students questions that I had come up with or that related to the general vocabulary and keywords that as a class were gone over. Students took notes on the key vocabulary words, therefore they would have them written or typed down, and could use them as a reference, also to note that they would be important for the rest of the lesson. After the discussion took up about half of the class and students were thoroughly engaged and for the most part willing to answer questions, or go off of a question and bring up something else they noticed or wondered about.
When students and I felt as if this discussion had run its course, we moved on to a class activity. Students were to look at political cartoons that were part of a document that contained how to analyze, interpret, and break down a political cartoon to understand its meaning. There were also questions on the packet for students to answer. Students were to complete this in groups and then this was discussed at the end of class. This was probably the highlight of my week in terms of teaching.
However, later in the week as Sociology students were and still are working on a Content Analysis over Conflict Theory and Deviance, seeing a particular student be overly engaged and excited for it, really shows how much the student loves this class and the content being taught. The student was eager to start the assignment and was excited to go home and watch the different news channels that they would be comparing and taking notes over.
